WEST HEAD & MCCARRS CREEK ROAD - WEEKEND CORONAVIRUS CONGESTION

• With beaches a no go zone, the need for “essential” family outings has now switched to the Ku Ring Gai National Park using the McCarrs Creek-West Head Road.

• Recent Sunday’s have recorded in excess of 400 cars through the (bottom) McCarrs Creek Road toll booth by 12.30pm. On the weekends - best be off the West Head Road by 9.30am and only use the Akuna Bay Road loop (in both directions). Also avoid McCarrs Creek Road (both directions) after 9.30am. The Akuna Bay loop is much quieter than either McCarrs Creek Road or the West Head Road.

• CycNSW has announced on 20 April 2020 that ALL racing (Club & State) and organised (group) training rides are suspended until 1 August. Any changes to the 1 August date will be announced progressively in the lead up to 1 August.

Paris Roubaix 19 - BiciSport did a Thursday recce ride a couple of days before the pro classic on the Sunday. All of the race route signs had been posted, so you couldn’t get lost. Mike O’Brien (left) and Mike Lawson started in Troisvilles (the first section of PR cobbles) and rode the 75k towards the Wallers Arenberg Forest.

• Recent Sunday’s have recorded in excess of 400 cars through the (bottom) McCarrs Creek Road toll booth by 12.30pm. .

• On the weekends - best be off the West Head Road by 9.30am and only use the Akuna Bay Road loop (in both directions). Also avoid McCarrs Creek Road (both directions) after 9.30am. The Akuna Bay loop is much quieter than either McCarrs Creek Road or the West Head Road.

• Sunday 29 March recorded in excess of 400 cars through the (bottom) McCarrs Creek Road tollbooth by 12.30pm. It was a super busy day on this road from 9.30am.

• On the weekends - best be off the West Head Road by 9.30am and only use the Akuna Bay Road (in both directions). Also avoid McCarrs Creek Road (either direction) after 9.30am. The Akuna Bay loop was much quieter than McCarrs Creek Road.

• Cycling Australia Masters Track Championships @ Brisbane @ 12-15 Mar - Peter Verhoeven, Lisa Benjamin & Jeremy Hopson all rode well.

  • Lise Benjamin took a cache of 4 Gold medals in the Kieran, Scratch, Pointscore & ITT plus Silver in the Team Sprint (just missed Gold by 0.33 seconds).

  • Peter Verhoeven qualified 8th in the Individual Pursuit (in 2min 42secs)

  • Jeremy Hopson took Bronze in the Individual Pursuit (in 3min 35secs)

• Bathurst Weekend @ 14-15 Mar - A tough course with Rockley Mountain one difficult climb after just 35k. Notable rides by Brett Cocks (6th), Eric Dole (6th), Ruth Strapp (7th), Ian Grainger (8th), Graeme Cockerton (13th), Ian Cocks (17th), Tom Green (35th) & Dom Zumbo (37th) just back from a hand injury.

• Bathurst Weekend @ 14-15 Mar - A great weekend of cycling but the jury is still well and truly out on the “new” B2B course and doing the Mt Panorama loop at the beginning of the big day out. Be that as it may congratulations to the following BiciSport starters in Peter Budd, Eric Dole, Mike O’Reilly, Ian Grainger, Brett Cocks, Melissa Budd, Ruth Strapp, Rhett Hall, Ian Cocks, Adam Kibble, Graham Cockerton, Alberto Ravanello and Frank Signor. • Huskisson Team Triathlon @ 1 Mar - Congratulations to Stew Campbell for yet another Husky team triathlon victory

• Tolland Weekend @ 7-8 Mar - CyclingNSW road handicaps are never easy but to only run 6 bunches across all abilities virtually guarantees that nobody is in the correct bunch (the CycNSW handicapping policy itself recommends 10 bunches). For Frank Signor (bunch 6) and Peter Budd (bunch 4) so it proved and both had a tough day in the cycling mosh pit. The race was over 5 laps and both were a DNF at the end of lap 4.

Paul was a long time member of the Canterbury CC (based near Wiley Park in Sydney’s south west), then a member of the Bankstown Sports Club CC and resided near Elanora Heights and could be seen pedalling up McCarrs Creek Road towards Terrey Hills most weekends. For many years Paul raced all of the country races promoted by CyclingNSW, most notably the Grafton to Inverell Classic and the Goulburn to Sydney Classic. Paul is the father of well known northside cyclist Ian Garrity (who himself won the Goulburn Sydney Classic).

• The service in memory of Paul will be held on Wednesday at Anne Wilson @ Mona Vale @ 12noon (corner Barrenjoey Rd & Darley Street). (by MO’R)

• Sprint GP #3 @ DGV @ 25 Jan - The Sprint GP featured State teams from Victoria, South Australia & NSW in preparation for the upcoming National Track Championships in Brisbane. 10 riders bettered 11 seconds in the qualifying round which set the tone for some great racing. Gavia Pass @ Italian Dolomites @ June 19 - Andrew Stuart took this amazing photo whilst the 4 riders in his peloton made their way to the top of the Gavia Pass from the Bormio side.

Not only is the Gavia Pass (just outside Bormio) nothing more than a single bitumen track hanging off a cliff, has a few dark tunnels (no lights), not to mention super steep gradients …. you also need to swim when the snow melts !!. Note the second rider has water above both hubs & cranks.

BiciSport Lake Cargelligo Classic @ 12 Jan - with the Tumut Classic cancelled due to the bushfires the members of BiciSport Griffith formed their own “BiciSport Classic” out of Griffith

Report by Peter Budd - In true BiciSport style the clockwork organisation had us away at the scheduled departure time of 6.30am for the 135k journey. We had a 20 seat bus organised to bring the 13 riders and their bikes home again.

Morning tea was at the half way stop at Rankins Springs with Melissa Budd organising the refreshments including her famous fruit cake as well as banana bread amongst other carbo things.

Then it was on to Lake Cargelligo. We were surprised by the number of b-double trucks passing us carrying hay up north plus empty trucks returning. A sign of the plight the drought causes. Not something our city members get to see.

We rolled into Lake Cargelilgo after 4.5 hours in the saddle for a solid ride. Lunch was again courtesy of Melissa and down by the Lake which gave the town its name. Surprisingly it was full of water and a beautiful country backdrop for lunch. Is there anything better than a cold watermelon after a long hot ride ?. Maybe its a country thing but the melon was crispy superb. There was also an esky of beer …

The challenge of the day was packing the 13 bikes into the bus whilst still leaving enough seats for the riders. Myself and Big Frank (Signor) used his best Tetris (?) skills to somehow make bike frames pack together along with wheels with seats for all. It was a big day out and a great replacement for the Tumut Classic. Air quality was brilliant with no smoke from the fires to the east or south.

BiciSport riders were Big Frank Signor (who asked you Frank ?), Roger Thompson-Seagrave, Michael Taylor, Melissa & Peter Budd & Albert Ravenello. In all a great day out and likely to do it again …. maybe with an invitation to our city based members for a country road trip
