Gewiss Professional Cycling Team (1987-1997). Sponsor was Gewiss (Italian electrical engineering), bikes were De Rosa on Campagnolo groupsets. Team manager was Emanuele Bombini and the Team doctor was Michele Ferrari. The sky blue Gewiss team jersey is now seen as an iconic retro design, especially when matched with a classy De Rosa frameset on the (then) new Campagnolo Ergo indexed gearing system. A blend of elegance, functionality and pure Italian style.

The team itself …. well, where do you start ? … as it was the 1990’s, it was Italy and it was too good to be true. The team won at every pedal stroke with Giro wins by Berzin & Gotti (assisted by Ugrumov), and one day Classic victories by Furlan, Minali & Argentin. Other notable team members were Bobrik (won a Tour of Lombardy), Alberto Vopli and a youthful Bjarne Rijs. The most notable victory was the 1994 Fleche Wallonne Classic in Belgium where the team went 1-2-3 in a blistering 70k breakaway with Argentin, Furlan & Berzin. The ‘94 Fleche podium demolition was generally deemed “too good to be true” and history would tend to suggest that this was indeed the case.
