THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE REPORT by Mike O’R
Randolph Baral (BiciSport Happy Wheels) lined up for his first Three Peaks after months of planning and committed training. Conditions were ideal on the Sunday with a firm breeze at the top of Mt Hotham (at 7.30am sitting comfortably in the comfy Mt Hotham cafe). The Mt Hotham climb itself was closed from 8am until 1pm with Randolph forecast to arrive at the Mount Hotham summit from Falls Creek at 10.45am. Randolph had kindly provided “real time” progress monitoring courtesy of Garmin Livetrack so his position was instantly available. See picture below. How good was that when you are supporting a rider from the roadside.
The event leader (and first NRS rider) crested the Hotham summit at 9.57am and Randolph came through right on target at 10.43am (first female came through at 10.32am). Randolph maybe stopped for 60-90 seconds, grabbed some race food, switched bidons, and vanished off down the mountain towards Omeo. Its difficult to gauge how many people in front of Randolph … maybe 90-110 riders (not easy to be any more precise). Randolph looked comfortable & composed at the Hotham summit.
Further on from Hotham and it was something of a longer but gradual descent into the township of Omeo, then into the Omeo Valley itself. Randolph was on something like an “8.30” finishing time but WTF Hill claimed another victim and 9.25 was the end (and difficult) result. Well done Randolph for a job well done.
