Flandria Professional Cycling Team - Rik Van Looy (Belgium) with Faema as a sub sponsor on the knicks
Flandria Professional Cycling Team - Roger De Vlaeminck (Belgium)
Flandria Professional Cycling Team (Belgium) from 1957 to 1979. The Flandria team (nicknamed the Red Guard) joined both Molteni and Brooklyn as one of the three super teams from the era. Pictured above are brothers Eric & Roger De Vlaeminck.
Flandria was a manufacturer of mopeds, bicycles, lawn mowers and motorbikes. Sub sponsors were equally varied in Dr Mann (medical supplies), Faema (coffee), Mars (chocolate bars) , Latina (insurance), Shimano (bicycle components), De Clerck, Carpenter, Comfortluxe and Kruger. During the 1970’s bringing in Shimano and developing the then new Dura Ace componentary was seen as revolutionary. Team manager was the legendary Belgian Briek Schotte.
The long and esteemed history of the team was daunting - assertive, driven, take no prisoners attitude that typified the no holds barred Belgian team culture. They won everything be it World Road Championships (with Van Looy, Monsere & Maertens), Grand Tours in Spain (Maertens won 17 stages) and Italy (Pollentier) and then there was the endless Classic victories courtesy of Pollentier, Godefroot, De Meyer, Van Springel, Maertens (again), Sean Kelly, Joop Zoetemelk, Peter Post and Rik Van Looy. They won it all and they won big. The battles with Eddy Merckx (Molteni) rivalled anything in cycle sport.
Flandria Professional Cycling Team - Walter Godefroot (Belgium) wins a stage in the Four Days of Dunkirk stage race in northern France.
Flandria Professional Cycling Team - Herman Van Springel with Flandria team dernys in the Bordeaux Paris Classic. Each rider raced behind their own team motorised derny.
Flandria Professional Cycling Team - Michel Pollentier (Flandria) leads team mate Freddy Maertens followed by Dutchman in Gerrie Knetemann (GAN)
