Sammontana Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1973-74
Sammontana was Italian ice cream, the bikes were either De Rosa or Benotto (seriously Italian). Groupsets were Campagnolo (no more Italian than that). Team manager was the iconic Alfredo Martini (the future Sports Director of the Italian National Team). The jersey is a retro icon and you can taste the garlic running through your veins.
At just two years in existence we probably deserved more of Sammontana, but the team had a somewhat narrow focus …. mostly Italian single day Classics and a couple of Giro’s. Franco Bitossi was the stand out leader (won both Giro Emelia & Veneto single day semi classics), supported by either Walter Riccomi, Fabbrizo Fabbri, Moreno Argentin, Claudio Corti, George Mount (USA) & Giuseppe Perletto (won a Giro stage). Some names listed here went on to far greater things in the future at either Gewiss Bianchi and other teams
