Goulburn Track Open @ 28 Jan - Davide Browne took second at the Goulburn Wheelrace Final

Tom Boonen @ Maarkedal Belgium @ 25 Jan - Yes, Belgium is crazy about cycling (that is a given). There are monuments to numerous past champions - Merckx, Schotte & Wijnendaele (who organised the early editions of the Tour of Flanders). Along comes the bronzed legs only of Tom Boonen - Tom is pictured just to the right of the twin pins monument.

Tom Boonen @ Maarkedal Belgium @ 25 Jan - yes Tom … this really sounded like a great idea when first proposed and we really have to make something of this going forward. Every cyclist will now get a picture at the Taainberg climb near Oudenaarde … am currently figuring out how to squeeze BiciSport leg warmers & matching overshoes over this lot !

Tom Boonen @ Maarkedal Belgium @ 25 Jan - Tom Boonen still looking somewhat baffled by the bronzed outcome

Okay Whisky Pro Team (Belgium) - 1966-77

Okay Whisky started in 1966, and stayed as the primary sponsor until 1970 when it changed alcoholic beverages to Geens Watney (1970), then Watney Maes Pils (1973-74) and finally just Maes Pils (1975-77). Yes, it was all about the whisky or the beer sponsorship - heck it beats the “sports washing” by undemocratic & failed foreign countries which is commonplace these days. Original 1966 groupsets were firstly French Mafac but then moved onto Italian Campagnolo. Bikes were either Diamant or Groene Leeuw (both Belgian of course).

The team started in 1966 with just 5 riders, but in 1967 it jumped up to 34 riders and again up to 38 riders in 1968. The team was strictly Flemish and no French speakers sighted on any team listing. Team information and results are pretty sparse but riders included Alfons De Bal, Marcel Kubacki (a great sprinter who won numerous Belgian races but whose great career goes largely ignored), Frans Verbeek (Classics specialist), then the legendary Flemish triple crown of Herman Van Springel, Ward Sels & Rik Van Looy.

Okay Whisky - a very talented start line with far left Herman Van Springel, Ward Sels (3rd from right) & Rik Van Looy (far right).

Frans Verbeek wins again for Watney beer. Verbeek went on to establish the VerMarc Belgian cycle clothing organisation.
