Watney Professional Cycling Team (Belgium) - Frans Verbeek (pictured) carried the nickname of the Flying Milkman being a dairy farmer by trade. Frans won several one day Classics (Amstel Gold, Fleche Wallonne & Belgian National Champion) but a staggering 17 times finished second in one day Classics. After a very successful racing career Frans launched Vermarc Clothing - a major European cycling clothing company.

Watney-Maes was an outstanding team with Frans Verbeek, Willy & Walter Planckaert, Frans Van Looy & Andre Dierickx. It was one tough Flemish unit

Tour of Flanders (Ronde) 1975 - A very talented Verbeek was one of the few to finish with Merckx on Flemish roads. Second place again beckons for Verbeek.

Famcucine Professional Cycling Team from 1980-82.

In a era when nearly every Italian professional cycling team was sponsored by either kitchens, home improvements or domestic appliances and here we are again.

Famcucine manufactured kitchens (similar to De Tongo, SCIC and Salvarani who also sponsored pro teams). Bike supplier was none other than the marque rider himself in Francesco Moser with Campagnolo the groupsets.

Lets hope the kitchens lasted longer than the team as it didn’t really survive much past Francesco’s last victory. The team was all about Francesco (yes, he was a class act and won a lot & often in both Classics & Tours) but beyond the Classic specialist German import Gregor Braun it was a bunch of unremarkable Italians trying to pilot Francesco to his next victory.

  • Gosford Central Coast Velodrome @ 6 Jan - Davide Browne (Happy Wheels) took 2 wins at Adcock Park

  • Tumut Classic Cyclosportive @ 10 Jan - Eric Dole takes 2nd outright in a great ride

  • Tumut as a cycling destination is something of a hidden gem. Cyclists from Sydney usually head for Jindabyne or Bright (Victoria) but Tumut is a real option next time you need a country escape. After keeping away from the more busy Snowy Mountains Highway there are numerous traffic free options alongside the Tumut River. The 13 BiciSport riders made the journey for the 6.15am start from the outskirts of Tumut. Just out of town it was a brief diversion to the top of the Blowering Dam wall, then a return journey down to the valley floor and the side roads along the Tumut River. More quiet back roads and home via Lacmalac and the final brief Wee Jasper climb then finishing again at Tumut.

  • Eric Dole & Ruth Strapp featured all day - both were in the small lead group at the 50k mark then Ruth got unshipped at approximately the 6ok mark on one of the short sharp climbs along the Tumut River. Eric went second outright & Ruth in the top 3 in the Womens category.

Le Groupment Professional Cycling Team 1995. We’re not sure what they did but it appears they didn’t either. Take a quick look because it didn’t last long.

The team jersey is universally acclaimed as the Worst Jersey Design of all time and always figures in any Lycra Hall of Shame competition. Nobody thought it (the jersey) was a good idea and the same could be said for the team itself as the ATM soon ran out of cash long before the tyres had a chance to go soft. The team never made it to the mid season Tour de France and the only people who got paid were the lawyers trying to figure it all out.

It was a pity that the team stopped before it really got going as the team was loaded with some super talent in Luc Leblanc (1994 World Professional Road Champion), Robert Millar (a great climber) and Marcel Wust (one of the best bunch sprinter’s of all time).

Gewiss Professional Cycling Team (1987-1997). Sponsor was Gewiss (Italian electrical engineering), bikes were De Rosa on Campagnolo groupsets. Team manager was Emanuele Bombini and the Team doctor was Michele Ferrari. The sky blue Gewiss team jersey is now seen as an iconic retro design, especially when matched with a classy De Rosa frameset on the (then) new Campagnolo Ergo indexed gearing system. A blend of elegance, functionality and pure Italian style.

The team itself …. well, where do you start ? … as it was the 1990’s, it was Italy and it was too good to be true. The team won at every pedal stroke with Giro wins by Berzin & Gotti (assisted by Ugrumov), and one day Classic victories by Furlan, Minali & Argentin. Other notable team members were Bobrik (won a Tour of Lombardy), Alberto Vopli and a youthful Bjarne Rijs. The most notable victory was the 1994 Fleche Wallonne Classic in Belgium where the team went 1-2-3 in a blistering 70k breakaway with Argentin, Furlan & Berzin. The ‘94 Fleche podium demolition was generally deemed “too good to be true” and history would tend to suggest that this was indeed the case.

Ariostea Ceramiche Professional Cycling Team - Ariostea (Italy) are providers of stone, marble, poreclain, ceramic wall & floor tiles. Framesets were either De Rosa or Colnago and Campagnolo groupsets. The team went from 1984-93 with Giancarlo Ferreti as the highly regarded Team Director.

The team was Italian to the core. They maybe didn’t win a lot early but major wins came after 1990. The picture above was the wet Kemmelberg cobbles in the Ghent Wevelgem Classic in Belgium

Team riders were a classy collection of outstanding athletes (mostly Italian) with a few notable foreigners towards the end. Some went on to greater things with other teams whilst others went onto either team management or team coaching with Silvano Contini, Rolf Sorensen (Classic specialist), Bruno Cenghiatta, Adriano Baffi (sprinter), Moreno Argentin (Classic specialist), Davide Cassani, Giorgio Furlan, Rolf Golz, Alberto Elli, Pascal Richard and Bjarne Rijs

Holdsworth Campagnolo Professional Cycling Team (UK) … back to the mother country !

The original Holdsworth Campagnolo team ran from 1967-78 but in more recent years another Holdsworth team has been rebirthed. Team colours were orange & blue on a matching orange Holdsworth frameset with chrome front forks on Campagnolo components. Team manager was Roy Thame.

Team riders had some real talent in Bob Addy (rode the 1968 Tour de France in the UK National Team), Les West (4th in the 1970 World Pro Road Race Championships), Colin Lewis, Keith Lambert & Phil Bayton. That was a very good team lineup with support riders in the caliber of Nigel Dean, Geoff Wiles & Dave Nie. The team dominated the UK pro cycling scene for over 10 years.

The team ran from 2000-2005 and dubbed the “Silver Team”. Team manager was Giancarlo Ferretti. The Silver Team won over 200 races … the concrete was hard, they raced hard & everywhere, and they won a lot & everywhere.

The team roster had current stars (for the period 2000-2005) but also contained numerous riders who became household names in future teams …. Vincenzo Nibali, Fabio Baldato, Dario Frigo, Aitor Gonzalez, Juan Antonio Flecha, Massimo Codol, Fabian Cancellara, Ivan Basso, Alessandro Petacchi, Filippo Pozzato & Frank Vandenbroucke …. numerous notables in that interesting team listing.

They raced hard, they played hard, they won a lot and big. Obviously you couldn’t get past Mario Cipollini most of the time but the team was much more than just Cipo and over the top publicity. Be it a Francesco Casagrande (one tough unit), Silvio Martinelli, Ivan Gotti (Giro win), Roberto Petito, Salvatore Commesso, Paulo Salvodelli, Stefano Zanini, Gilberto Simoni (Giro win), Fabio Sacchi, Igor Astarloa (2003 World Road Champion) pictured above, Damiano Cunego (Giro win) and Danilo De Luca.

  • The gravel raid on the Barrington Tops included Ian Grainger, John Horsburgh, Wayne McDonald, Karl Hoad, Mark Almond and Richard Makin.

  • This enduro effort was 10 hours on the Saturday & 8 hours on the Sunday. Ian Grainger used his 25kg tractor (pictured) which looked pretty handy when the gravel bikes were picking up several punctures. The Victoria Hotel at Moonan Flat on Day 1 was a great sight after 110k and 2500 metres of climbing. As Ian G nicely put it … “do not do this trip”.

Faema Professional Cycling Team - Version 1 was 1955-62 and Version 2 was 1968-70. Where does one even begin to summarise this team juggernaut ?.

Faema has a long history of professional cycling team sponsorship. Faema (and Faemino) are Italian expresso coffee machine makers of world renown.

Faema Version 1 (1955-62) was Italian registered with Rik Van Looy (Belgium) as the notable team leader (Rik won numerous one day Classics and a World Road Championships). Rik was indeed a legend of the sport. Rik Van Looy carries the iconic nickname in Belgium of “Rik 1”. Rik 2 is Rik Van Steenbergen and Rik 3 is Rik van Linden … there are only three “Rik’s” in Belgian cycling folklore.

Faema Version 2 (1968-70) was undoubtedly more famous as it was home to the greatest cyclist of all time in Eddy Merckx. Frames were Masi, groupsets were Campagnolo. Team manager was none other than Guillaume Driessens. Merckx and Driessens most certainly didn’t get on. Italian registered in 1968, the team was Belgian registered in 1969-70 when more Belgians joined the team (and the Italians got squeezed out)

Team victories were endless with Merckx taking his first Giro victory in 1968, followed by the Tour de France in 1969. The Giro-Tour double followed for Merckx in 1970. One day Classic victories flowed like good Belgian beer …

Team riders were nothing short of the best of the best - Eddy Merckx, Roger Swerts, Guido Reybrouck, Martin Van Den Bossche, Victor Van Schil, Vittorio Adorni, Joseph Bruyere, Jos Huysmanns, Joseph Spruyt, Italo Zilioli & Patrick Sercu. You name it, they won it.

Carrera Professional Team (1984-96) came out of the original Inoxpran Professional team (Inoxpran was established in 1979). Sponsorship was from Carrera Jeans, bikes were Battaglin from Italy, groupsets were Campagnolo. This team was Italian to the core.

The team was nothing but pure class with a seemingly endless supply of top quality talent … be it Gio Battaglin, Robero Visentini, Stephen Roche, Claudio Chiappucci, Guido Bontempi, Bruno Leali, Urs Zimmermann, Erich Maechler & Marco Pantani. Team manager was Davide Boifava.

The team won events all across Europe, be it one day Classics or the Giro, the Tour or a World Championship with Stephen Roche.

AUSCYCLING, CYCLINGNSW & BICISPORT AFFILIATION

  • To ensure BiciSport continues to deliver its program of support for all members we have added an affiliation with AusCycling to our existing affiliation with CyclingNSW and when BiciSport members renew their membership via the AusCycling website please ensure they select BiciSport as their club of choice.

  • BiciSport is now listed on the AusCycling website

  • At the practical level each BiciSport member has an annual renewal date (not everybody is 1 January 2021) and the majority of BiciSport members have an annual membership renewal date in February & March 2021. The new AusCycling organisation will continue to recognise your current Cycling Australia licence and allow you to race on that Cycling Australia licence up until the renewal date (you then switch to AusCycling).

  • You should expect to receive an AusCycling email directly to you just before your annual renewal date and you simply follow the prompts and rejoin (ensure you select BiciSport as your club of choice). Mike O’Reilly (BiciSport President)

The original “motley crew” of a professional cycling team. Too few riders in their prime (like Laurent Biondi) and for the majority it was the Last Card Saloon and pending retirement was beckoning. The team only existed for one year and that may have been a good thing.

Riso Scotti was an Italian team from 1998-99 and came out of the demise of the MG Technogym team. The primary sponsor was Riso Scotti (rice producer).

Team managers were unchanged from MG Technogym in Bombini, Volpi, Leali & Ferretti. Framsets were De Rosa and groupsets were Campagnolo.

The dates of 1998 & 1999 are something of an indication that team performances were “interesting”. Team members included Baldato, Bobrik, Schefer, Casagrande, Cenghialta, De Luca, Minali (won a Giro stage), Micelli (also won a Giro stage) and Basso. History would be unkind to some but dull it most certainly wasn’t.

Jollj Ceramica # 1 - After weeks in Belgium, its back to Italy and Jollj Ceramica. The team was only small but highly accomplished from 1973 to 1977. As the name implies the main sponsor was ceramic kitchen tiles and pavers. Campagnolo was the groupset of choice. Bikes were Pinerello.

The team itself was mostly Italian pure class - Gio Battaglin, Fausto Bertoglio (won the 1975 Giro), Knut Knudsen, Pierino Gavazzi (the designated team sprinter) and Martin Van Den Bossche (ex team mate of Eddy Merckx from the Faema days).

Jollj Ceramica # 5 - Martin Van Den Bossche was a famous team mate to Eddy Merckx at the 1969 Tour de France (riding for team Faema). Martin switched to the Jollj Ceramica team late in his very successful career.

It was March 2015 and Mike O’Reilly was determined to see if he could get a Jollj Ceramica jersey autographed by Martin himself. So with the assistance of Sille De Bock we located Martin in nearby East Flanders. Martin now owns a successful kitchen renovations business and greeted us both warmly and kindly signed a jersey and duly dated it 19-3-15. Martin couldn’t speak a word of English but it didn’t deter from a totally great experience.

Kelme Professional Cycling Team is more a case of what you can’t say in defense of the indefensible. This team defined the term indefensible.

Established in Spain from 1986 until 2006 with Kelme (shoes), Costa Blanca (Regional Government) with bike sponsorship from Gios or Merckx. Groupsets were Campagnolo.

A patchwork quilt of “quality” riders in respect of Valverde, Heras, Sevilla, Casero & Escartin & Co. The team was much more infamous for the Manzano doping allegations from systemic blood doping and the Operation Puerto doping allegations. In short, a team full of results with two victories in the Tour of Spain but much more notable for the less appealing aspects of a great sport.

Ijsboerke # 1 - The Ijsboerke manager was none other than Patrick Lefevere (of Mapei & Quick Step fame). The team ran from 1973-82. Sponsorship was Ijsboerke (ice cream manufacturer), Capri Sonne (drinks), Warncke (communications). Bike sponsors were varied with Bertin (1973-74), Colner (75), Colnago (76-77), Gios (78), Koga Miyata (80-81), Merckx (82). Campagnolo did the components. Originally there was a large 31 riders in the team but this drifted down to a more manageable 21 riders in latter years.

Ijsboerke # 5 - If there was ever a Seventies “super team” then this it and it laid the groundwork for what followed at then Mapei and onto the now of Quick Step thanks to managers Willy Jossart & Patrick Lefevere (now the king of team Quick Step).

The list of talent was seemingly unlimited in Gregor Braun, Ronald De Witte, Rudi Pevenge (of Jan Ulrich manager fame), Paul Haghedooren, Peter Winnen, Fons De Wolf, Frank Hoste, Bert Pronk, Gery Verlinden, Daniel Willems, Andre Dierckx, Roger Swerts, Herman Van Springel, Graeme Gilmore (Aussie), Frans Verbeek, Didi Thurau, and the late Dirk Wayenberg (pictured above). That is one serious bunch of talent.
