Sutherland Waratah Park Criterium @ 31 Oct - Craig Pager (BiciSport Anytime Fitness) rode B grade. A big field so hard to get position, but Craig finally worked his way to the front. With two laps to go Craig hit the front and jumped across to a single breakaway rider. At the bell lap the peloton closed down the gap and Craig finished in the peloton.

Ian Grainger & Mike Lawson rode C grade at Lansdowne Park with 37 starters in C grade for a 37kph average.

Rich in history, rich in results, this was one super team. They won both Classics & Tours and they won every race worthy of note. Sponsors were Miko (ice cream) Mercier (bikes), Hutchinson (tyres), Fagor (kitchen appliances), GAN (insurance), Vivagel, COOP (supermarkets), Hoonved (washing machines), BP (petrol). Fangio-Tonissteiner-OM Trucks-Mavic Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1979-86

Something of a low budget team that survived from 1979-86 with moderate results but worthy of a closer look. Fangio made Belgian bikes, Sapeco, Marc, EcoTurbo, Tonissteiner was mineral water, OM Trucks were just that & Mavic provided the groupsets. Team manager was ex-pro Wilfred Reybrouck. Dark green team kit reminds one of the current dull & somewhat boring Rapha style kit paraded around your local Aussie suburb.

A team focused on the Belgian kermesse (criterium style) racing calendar with the odd invite to a local Belgian Classic or two. Kermesse riders were Edwin Bafcop, Gary Wiggins (father of) and Michel Vaarten, with a more Belgian Classic squad in Rudy Matthijs, Michel Dernies, Eric Van Lancker & Willy Tackaert.

Hertekamp Magniflex Novy Professional Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1970-73

Nothing like having your main sponsor (Hertekamp) being a gin style seriously alcoholic beverage ... that’ll take the leg pain away !!. Magniflex made bedding/mattresses, Novy was a Belgian bike frameset manufacturer with both Shimano/Campagnolo the groupsets.

The Hertekamp team’s main claim to fame was riding the Tour of Italy in 1970 & 71 (hence the Italian sponsor in Magniflex) and the Tour of Spain in 1971. The team roster rotated through 45 riders in 3 years and included Aussie legend Rob Whetters (1973), plus Jose De Cauwer (went to TI Raleigh), Wilfred Wesemael (also to TI Raleigh), Noel Van Clooster, Willy de Geest, Roland Desmet & Noel Van Tyghem. The most notable team members were Rik Van Linden (a future Classics super star at Bianchi) and Georges Pintens (one of the few riders on a good day to challenge Eddy Merckx)

DAF Professional Cycling Team - 1979-83

Dutch to the core and a strange sponsorship mix of DAF (truck manufacturer), Cote D’Or (chocolates) and TeVe Blad (a weekly TV magazine). Framesets were either Lejeune, Gazelle or Rossin, with Campagnolo the groupset of choice. Team management was legendary Fred De Bruyne and Jose De Cauwer.

Team membership was loaded with talent and results flowed - Gerrie Van Gerwen (World Amateur Road Champion), Rene Martens (won Tour of Flanders 1982), Luc Colijn, Guy Nulens, Eddy Schepers, Willy Tackert, Guido Van Calster, Roger De Vlaeminck (pictured above as Belgian Champion), Adri Van Der Poel, Rik Van Linden, Dirk Heirweg & Hennie Kuiper (won both Tour of Flanders and Tour of Lombardy in 1981).

Herve Boutin (BiciSport Anytime Fitness) took it upon himself to source a “new” (2002) Eddy Merckx Elite brand road frame from a local bike shop, sourced a Campagnolo 10 speed groupset coupled with a period correct Mavic Kyrsium 10 speed wheelset. The matching orange Eddy Merckx handlebar tape sealed the final restoration job with matching Eddy Merckx bidon & bidon cage.

Gazzola Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1960-64

The team rode 5 Tours of Italy with no stage wins. Notable team leaders sat with Charly Gaul & Ferdi Kubler (won Tour de France 1950 & World Championships 1951).

Gazzola was Italian pasta, bikes were again Italian in Fiorelli and tyres were Hutchinson. Team riders had limited results with Franco Cribiori more famous as a Sports Director at the Brooklyn Chewing Gum team some 10 years later.

Charly Gaul won the 1956 & 59 Tour of Italy (pictured above) for the EMI team then joined Gazzola in 1960

Tour of Flanders Cyclosportive @ 18 Sept - Koen & Maarten Verhulst (BiciSport Belgium) on top of the steep Patersberg cobbled climb having completed 205k of the 217k journey from the Antwerp start to the Oudenaarde finish. Usually the Flanders cyclosportive is held the day before the professional Flanders Classic in early April but with Covid it was moved to just before the World Championships in Flanders.

Spring Oil Fuchs (Filotex) Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1963-80.

The broad range of sponsors from Spring Oil, Fuchs, Sanson (food producer), Luxor TV & finally Filotex. Groupsets were Campagnolo and framsets in the Filotex years were Benotto.

The team won anywhere and everywhere but with a strong Italian bias. Franco Bitossi (pictured above) won 171 races in a stellar career (just about every Italian classic there is to mention) plus the first Italian to win the Points Classification in the Tour de France. The Moser brothers in Diego, Aldo & Francesco made up the rest of the squad together with Italo Zilioli & Ugo Colombo.

BiciSport Belgium @ 13 Sept - Eddy Ver Hulst taking his grandson (Briek) out for a 30k ride around the picturesque laneways between Temse and Antwerp in East Flanders. The Ver Hulst family has supported many BiciSport riders in Belgium since 1987. Briek is named after the legendary Belgian cyclist Briek Schotte (pictured below)

Alberic (“Briek”) Schotte won the World Professional Road Championships in 1948 and 1950 (wearing the World Champions jersey above), plus Briek won the Tour of Flanders in 1942 and 1948. His nickname was Iron Briek due to his “Flemish hardness”.

Team Telekom (Germany) - 1991 to 2007

Sponsorship was Telekom (communications) plus a staggering 22 supporting sponsors. The team was managed by the legendary Walter Godefroot (Belgium) and every DS on the team was both talented & highly skilled. Bikes were either Pinarello, Giant or Eddy Merckx. Team kit was a stylish pink/black/white for the 29 riders on the team roster.

The mega team won and won big in all disciplines of the sport - Classics, Tours, the Olympics. The win list was endless and looking at the team roster it was difficult to see who were the domestics in this talented gruppetto. This was a champion team loaded with individual champions - Rijs, Zabel, Aldag, Botero, Savodelli, Aerts, Hondo, Julich, Ullrich, Vino, Kloden, Guerini, Gerdermann, Griepel, Wesemann, Hammond, Hansen, Evans, Rogers, Klier and Merckx … how much talent can you squeeze into one team ?

Germanvox Wega Professional Cycling Team (Italy) - 1967-70

Germanvox made television sets, Wega the coffee, bikes were Coppi, groupsets were Campagnolo.

The team itself, well ... It was loaded full of Italians but if you wanted results it was all about the foreigners in Ole Ritter (Denmark) & Guido Reybrouck (100% Belgian with a very Italian first name).

The Germanvox team rode the Tour of Italy four times and Ritter won two stages plus held the World Hour Record on the velodrome. Reybrouck won three stages in the Tour of Spain plus the Points Classification as well, then managed two stage wins in the Paris Nice stage race. The highly regarded Vito Taccone (Italy) rode for the Germanvox team but had well and truly hit his “used by date” at this point in his career.

St Michel-Auber 93 Professional Team (France) - 1994 to now

Auber 93 is a broad based team established in 1947 and runs the full gambit of juniors, elites & masters. The professional side of Auber 93 started in 1994 and is ongoing to today and originally included sponsorship from Peugeot, Big Mat (Supermarkets) and now sponsored by St Michel. The team is well known for five starts in the Tour de France under the Big Mat sponsorship. The last Tour de France participation was 2001.

Team members included Cyril Saugrain, Theirry Gouvenou, Pascal Lino and Anglophiles Jeremy Hunt, Jay Sweet & Patrick Jonker. The five starts at Le Tour was no mean feat in the broader Auber 93 history and today the team operates as a Category 3 professional team. That is vision and ongoing commitment.

Frisol Professional Cycling Team (Dutch) - 1973-77

Sponsors were Frisol (Dutch oil trader), Flair Plastics, Thirion, Gazelle (framesets) and Campagnolo (groupsets).

An interesting team line up with several notables including aussie legend Don Allan (won a stage in the Tour of Spain), Luis Ocana (won the Tour de France), Cees Priem (future DS at TVM team), Jan Raas (won 1977 Milan San Remo), Roger Rosiers (won Paris Roubaix), Wilfred Wesemael, Fedor Den Hertog (won a small fortune from Dutch “amateur” victories) & Hennie Kuiper (1975 World Road Champion). All in all a classic Dutch team loaded with seemingly endless talent.

Puch Professional Cycling Team (France) - 1980-85

Sponsors were Puch (manufactured both bicycles & mopeds), Wolber (bicycle tyres), Eurotex, Campagnolo, Sem & de Gribaldy. Team manager was Marcel Boishardy with Rudi Altig as his assistant. Altig was a World Pro Road Champion in a prior era and rode for Molteni.

Several notable riders, several of which had previously exited out of Peugeot-Esso … like Thevenet, Ovion, Hezard and Arnaud but, as a team nobody really won much as most were well past their very best. The team did ride the Tour de France and Agostinho was prominent as was Jostein Wilmann. Agostinho sadly died when he collided with a stray dog during a race.

TopSport Vlaanderen Professional Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1994 until now

If any team typifies the heart & soul of Flemish (Belgian) cycling then this is it. Riders are all Flemish, sponsors are primarily the local Flemish Government sports council coupled with Baloise (insurance). Framesets are Eddy Merckx (naturally) on Campagnolo groupsets. All that is missing is Duvel beer and frites & mayo.

Living on the edge of the World Tour has victories in maybe short supply, but maybe it was more of a launching pad for numerous riders who went forward to absolute stellar careers. Velo Club Roubaix Cycling Team (France) - From 2007 until now

VC Roubaix has operated as a Category 3 professional team in northern France based out of the famous Roubaix Velodrome. Main sponsorship is the local Lille Metropolitan Council, with secondary sponsors in Dalkai, Natura4Ever and currently Xelliss. Framesets are by either LaPierre or Argon 18 on Shimano with a likeable pink/black/white team strip. Most notable VC Sports Team Director is the ex professional Belgian Michel Dernies.

With a local French Council as the main sponsor its not surprising that most team members are local French riders with the main exception being the Belgians Baptiste Plankaert & Max Vantomme (won the Le Samyn Classic way back in 2014). Operating on the edge of the World Tour means that significant wins are less than rare but all credit to the team riders & supportive sponsors for being in there fighting in a very competitive tier of the cycling pecking order.

FDJ Professional Cycling Team (France) - 1994 to now

Founded by the legendary Marc Madiot in 1994, the team went professional in 1997. Madiot won Paris Roubaix in 1985 & 1991. Long term sponsorship & part team ownership is Francaise des Jeux (lottery), Lapierre (framesets) and Shimano (Groupsets). Grouprama (French insurance group) came on board as a sponsor with the Paris Olympics just around the corner. Team kit is highly desirable and you could do worse than to own every version (they all look good).

Team results over the years were spectacular (in parts) but they certainly didn’t dominate which was understandable with the sport running on “two speeds” for several years. Team members were many and varied with Vogondy, Gilbert, Nazon, Heulot, Rebellin (won San Sebastian & Zurich Classics), Guesdon (won Paris Roubaix Classic), three Aussies in Wilson, McGee & Cooke (Tour & Giro victories), and in more recent times Demare (sprinter & U23 World Champion), Gaudu, Kung and Pinot (won the Tour of Lombardy). Pinot can be brilliant on any given day although these days appear more historical than into the future and Pinot seems to spend more time being injured/recovering than actually winning these days.

Griffith BiciSport @ every Tuesday - With Greater Sydney in lockdown its good to see our Griffith BiciSport members donning the winter lycra and lapping the Griffith area most mornings.

Griffith rides in winter are chilly with 4-5 degrees the morning norm - so good gloves and over boots very much the go. Mid week rides start at 6am from the Budd Service Corse and then head off to the outskirts of Griffith towards Lake Wyangan which can also include the only climb in Griffith towards Pioneer Park not far from the Griffith Airport. Coffee is taken in the Griffith main street. The longer weekend rides start at 7am and can include the 120k loop to Leeton & return.

Winfix Arnolds Sicherheit Professional Cycling Team (Germany)

A third division German team that operated on the fringe of the big league but never had the budget (nor the inclination ?) to go any further. It was more of a half way house for riders who were on the way up or alternatively on the way down the cycling totem pole. The best known team rider was Linus Gerderman who most certainly was on the way up after he left Winfix.

The Commonwealth Bank Classic had just finished (forever) and Mike O’R received a call from the Herald Sun Tour promoter …. Mike, do you want to manage the German Winfix team to the 2004 SunTour ?. Mike naturally said yes, and so began the FunTour 2004. What followed was shades of good fun, bad fun and outright shambolic fun.

The shambolic bit was everywhere to be seen … Mike organised a local team masseuse but that turned sour within just 24 hours (he sniffed a total shambles and just walked out) and a part time replacement masseuse was somehow located (a nurse from Shepparton). To add some interest there was a surprise … a real German “Manager” was also on the FunTour (he couldn’t speak a word of English) which relegated Mike to every job the real Manager didn’t want to do (be it bus driver, accommodation consultant, mechanic, babysitter, human Google Mapster, team car driver or financial-currency adviser).

The team equipment was a train wreak as it (the equipment) had been flogged senseless since the European season started in January and this was now late October. The team equipment wasn’t worth a cracker. Budget ? … what budget ? … it was a European holiday of sorts. The additional Assistant German Manager (who shall remain nameless) spoke perfect English but also bought the wife and son.

To the race itself and Mike O’R picked up a hefty fine from the commissaires caught pacing a German rider back to the main peloton out the back of rural Ballarat somewhere (it was either that or miss the time cut and send the rider home) … geez !. The final end to the FunTour was the Assistant Manager who drove like a maniac and thoughtlessly crashed the team bus on the last day on the drive into Melbourne. Are we having a fun tour yet ?.

The best bit of the FunTour 2004 was meeting three outstanding individuals who were professional, diligent, kind and thoughtful - Thomas Liese, Jorn Reuss & Timo Scholz. Three gentleman indeed but the rest ….

Group Strada Dreher Professional Cycling Team (Italy) - 1970-72

The Dreher family started their quality Austrian beer brewing business in 1780 which continues strongly to this day. Dreher sponsored the team for 3 years (until the end of 1972) then sponsorship moved to the more well known Brooklyn Chewing Gum from 1973-77. Beer marketing had a real cycling team focus with team riders displayed on Dreher beer cans of your choice.

The Dreher team in the first three years was comparatively small in number (Brooklyn had a substantially bigger team roster) but contained some serious talent in Roger De Vlaeminck (won Paris Roubaix, Milan Vignola and stages in the Giro & Tirreno Adriatico), Patrick Sercu, Ole Ritter, Julien Stevens, Luigi Sgarbozza and Pierfranco Vianelli (Olympic Champion 1964).

TI Raleigh Professional Racing Team (UK) - 1972-83 and it was English sponsored but a Dutch dominated team through and through. Peter Post won Paris Roubaix in 1965 and was the linchpin manager of the team full stop. It was the Peter Post way or it was the exit door for you. It could be rude to say Post didn’t rate English cyclists in the team, but safer to say he preferred the Dutch or Belgians and Post was no democrat. It all turned sour at the end of 1983 - Peter Post took 7 riders to head the Panasonic team and Jan Raas took 6 riders to start the Kwantum team and their only thing in common was pure distain for the other. Kwantum has became Jumbo Visma of today.

Sponsorship was TI (Tube Investments - a holding company), Raleigh (UK bike & frame manufacturer), Mc Gregor, Creda and Campagnolo did the groupsets.

The team line up was big, classy, won everything (Tours, Classics, World Championships) and won any Team Time Trial on offer. Victories included the Tour de France (with Joop Zoetemelk), Tour de Swiss x 3 (Kuiper, Wellens & Wesemael), World Championships x 3 (with Knetemann, Raas & Kuiper), Tour of Belgium plus a string of Classics (Zurich, Paris Tours, Paris Brussells, Paris Roubaix (Raas), Het Volk, Amstel Gold x 5 (Raas again), Ghent Wevelgem and the Tour of Flanders (Raas yet again). How would like any of these in your team … Frank Hoste, Leo Van Vliet, Ludo Peeters, Gerrie Knetemann, Urs Freuler, Dave Lloyd (UK), Sid Barras (UK), Henk Lubberding, Rene Pijnen, Peter Winnen, Johan Van Der Velde, Didi Thurau, Jose De Cauwer & Roy Schuiten. This was one seriously tough unit.

The Peugeot 504 team car was a stalwart of the Tour de France through the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s. The 2021 Tour de France features Alpecin Fenix beside the traditional 504 in the jersey design worn by Raymond Poulidor (see pictures above), being a most thoughtful tribute to the late French champion

The story of the Flandrien Hotel and their contribution to cycling heritage with their own team ‘504’ is a great journey. Mike O’R was contacted recently by Jamie Anderson (an Aussie living in Belgium) on his 1980 Peugeot 504 and the Flandrien Hotel project. Before long it blossomed into ‘dressing’ the Flandrien Hotel 504 with the standard Peugeot team decals from the 1980’s (not the Tour de France style logos which are different in layout around the car). and how to effect the best result. It didn’t take long at all and the dream was realized to a stunning conclusion.

June 2021 - the Flandrien Hotel near Brakel (Belgium) in the heart of cycling mad Flanders and outside sits the delightfully restored 1980 Peugeot 504. The ‘504’ was thoughtfully restored in original Peugeot team colours featuring the full side panel ‘checker board’ design and period correct Esso decals.

Flandrien Hotel-Peugeot ‘504’ team car (circa 1980) was wrapped in nearby Oudenaarde and has only 60,000k on the clock. Note the differences in the decal layout with this standard team car and the 504 used for just 23 days in July at the Tour de France (see below)

The Tour de France Peugeot - Esso team ‘504’ was specifically supplied by ASO for each team at the Tour de France. The Tour de France decal layout was different (compared to the normal season team car) for the 23 days of the Tde F on both the car bonnet and side doors. Hennie Kuiper is cycling beside the TdeF style Peugeot team car with Sports Director Maurice De Muer (note the ‘Esso’ on the jersey shoulders).

Meanwhile the BiciSport Tour de France Peugeot 504 with the period 1975 Tour de France decal layout from the ASO. At the time (1975) the team sponsorship included BP petrol & Kleber tyres, but the team subsequently had sponsorship from both Esso and Shell. Its easy to spot the difference between the two different decal configurations. Picture was taken above the Spit Bridge on the Seaforth side.

MELBURN ROOBAIX - COVID CAUSES A DATE CHANGE TO 29 AUGUST

• The Melburn Roobaix Cyclosportive set down for late June is now scheduled for 29 August courtesy of the latest Melbourne Covid lockdown

SINGLETON STATE TEAMS TIME TRIAL - RESERVE SATURDAY 30 OCTOBER

• By the time you read this it could be time to dust off the time trial beast and start thinking about the NSW Team Time Trial Championships on Saturday 30 October at Singleton

• BiciSport training sessions for the prospective TTT teams will commence in early August at Terrey Hills based out of Miramare Gardens (Sandstone Cafe on Myoora Rd).

BOWRAL CLASSIC ADDS SATURDAY CRITERIUM TO THE OCTOBER WEEKEND

• The Bowral Classic has added a Saturday criterium based around the Bradman Oval on the outskirts of Bowral. Well done Bowral Classic for making a great weekend even better.

Amore & Vita Professional Cycling Team - 1948 until now

This Italian based team commenced in 1948 and has been UCI Division 3 registered team in Italy, Poland, UK, USA, Ukraine, Albania and now Latvia. Not sure what that is all about …. Despite a 1948 start date the team went “professional” in 1984 as Fanini Wuhrer with Lorenzo Fanini as the founding father, with Ivano Fanini in charge.

Team sponsors and jersey changes are too numerous to list with Amore & Vita (Love & Life anti abortion lobby) Pepsi, Beretta (pasta), McDonalds, SMP, Prodir (pens), 7UP (drinks) and Galatron. Jersey design was a continuous rotating door and changes every year.

Team members were pretty illustrious with passing visits by Cipollini, Bartoli, Massi, Gaggioli, Tafi, Sorensen, Quaranta, Gavazzi, Chioccioli, Di Basco, Magnussen & Ljungblad. Strangely the win list was pretty slim (understatement) but the public visibility remained pretty high up until the UCI World Tour categorization limited their top level racing activities.

The highlight of any team had to be having a team presentation with Pope John Paul 2 in 1989 at the Vatican.

  • Update @ 21 June - Raoul did take a heavy knock from the car with several broken bones (collarbone/ribs/pelvis) but Raoul is in remarkably good spirits and on the way to recovery.

  • From next week Raoul will be in Delmar Rehab Hospital in Dee Why but can only take one visitor at a time. If you wish to visit please first SMS Raoul on 0427 579 884.

BiciSport @ Thursday 17 June @ Centennial Park - L to R … John, John, Peter, Terry, Mike, Ian & Glenn. The Thursday ride departs the Spruce Goose Cafe in the middle of Centennial Park at 10.30am and does the flat 4k loop around the Park until 11.30am. All Welcome

Gerolsteiner Professional Cycling Team (Germany) - 1997 to 2008

The team originally started in 1997 as Team Cologne and morphed into Gerolsteiner in 1999. Sponsors were Gerolsteiner (mineral water), Shimano (groupsets) and Specialized (framesets). Team kit was a highly desirable light blue and who doesn’t want a Specialized frameset (yes please).

The team won big and they won everywhere with 250 team victories over 10 years across Grand Tours (a 2003 TdeF stage win) and Classics (Rebellin won it all in 2004 - with Fleche, Leige & Amstel). Numerous team members contributed towards the 250 victories with Georg Totschnig (Grand Tours), then Haselbacker, Pollack, Rich, Lang, Hondo & Wegmann. Stefan Schumacker & Bernard Kohl also contributed.
