Zetelhallen Pro Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1994-2000

A Belgian third division team trading on the fringes of the cycling hierachy. A limited team roster of only 10 riders with sponsorship from Zetelhallen (Hoboken & Mechelen suburban furniture stores), RDM Vosschemie, Vodka ?, Van Dijk, Ysco and Aluplast. Bikes were either Bio Racer (now more famous as a cycling lycra manufacturer) or Tommasini ? (Italian). Groupsets were Campagnolo.

Riders were talented but maybe moreso either prior or post to this particular team. Johnny Dauwe (team sprinter), Frank Hoj (real results followed after Zetelhallen), Jan Bogaert (again more results on the career sheet prior to Zetelhallen) and Gino Primo (a good Belgian kermesse performer). The team collected three doping infractions towards the end.

Castorama Professional Cycling Team (France) - 1990-95

In reality the team had a much longer history coming out of Gitane-Campagnolo, Renault, Systeme U, Super U then into Castorama in 1990. Castorama was similar to a Bunnings (a French domestic hardware chain), bikes were either Raleigh (UK) or Guimard (French). Groupsets were Campagnolo then Shimano. Jersey design reflected the hardware chain sponsor and enough said (it was a total lycra shocker) and designed around a tradesman’s singlet.

The Casto years were high on talent and they won a lot with Laurent Fignon (pictured above, now sadly RIP from cancer), Jacky Durand (won Tour of Flanders), Thomas Davy, Laurent Brochard (pre 60%), Luc Leblanc, Thierry Marie & Fred Moncassin. Bjarne Rijs (pre 60%) and Pascal Simon.

Lotto Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1985 to today

Simply impossible to snapshot this team into a few paragraphs. The cornerstone of Belgian & world professional cycling. As the team is rich in history then so to the sponsors from Lotto, Soudal, Superclub, Isoglass, Mobistar, Adecco, Domo, Davitamon, Predictor, Silence, Omega Pharma & Belisol. Team management started with Walter Godefroot & Patrick Lefevere with later day managers in Marc Sargent & Herman Frison (both retired as managers this year). Bikes were either MBK, Merckx or Ridley and components either Mavic or Campagnolo but rumor has it SheMaNO in 2022

Team talent was endless with several Aussies (McEwen, Ewan, Sweeney, Lloyd & Evans). The remainder was a endlees list of top talent with Eeckhout, Steels, Steegmans, De Gendt, Phil Gilbert, Wellens, Criquielion, Museeuw, Verbrugghe, Bruyneel (pictured above), Tchmil, Hoste, Greipel & Campenaerts. They won it all be it numerous Classics, Tours, and several Six Day events.

Domex - Weinmann Professional Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1989-91

Domex is better known in many countries as Domestos bleach used in everyday domestic cleaning. Weinmann sold cycling componentary and Eddy Merckx manufactured the bikes. Team management was the legendary duo of Walter Godefroot & the one the only Patrick Lefevere (now of Quick Step fame).

The team itself featured some classy individuals in Beat Breu (won a Tour of Switzerland), Carlo Bomans (pictured - Belgian National Road Champion), Johnny Dauwe (sprinter), Michel Dernies (classics), Maarten Ducrot (hard man), Thomas Wegmuller, and super star in Adrie Van Der Poel (father of … ). Besides Beat winning his home race in Switzerland they won several stages in the Tour de France and the team itself got cleaned out at the end of 1991.

Paternina Professional Cycling Team (Spain) - 2000-2004

Paternina is a highly regarded (and expensive) Spanish wine, Jazztel (team clothing), and Costa de Almeria (Spanish Tourist Office). Bikes were either Orbea or Krups

The wine was (and still is) top tier but the jury was out on the team itself. It was very much all about Marino Lajarreta who was the Tour rider of considerable talent (rode everything, raced everywhere and regularly won when things got hilly). ably supported by aussies Hodge & Stephens. Dick Dekker (Netherlands) was the designated sprinter but it was a blank results canvas beyond that.

Bowral Classic this coming Sunday 12 December - the best cyclosportive in the country launches on Saturday with a criterium around Bowral on the Saturday afternoon (around Bradman Oval) then the main cyclosportive on the Sunday commences in the Bowral main street from 6.30am, finishing at nearby Loseby Park (near the Bowral Hospital)

BiciSport is taking a good sized peloton of team members to Tumut on January 9. This is a great cyclo over some delightful country roads just outside Tumut. Details in the Special Events section of this website.

The European road season has finished but Milan San Remo is just over three months away … can’t wait

Caja Rural Professional Cycling Team (Spain) - 1987-2021

Caja Rural is a Spanish Rural Bank (Caja means bank) and Seguros is insurance, AKAI was stereos. Bikes have been Fuji, Orbea, De Rosa or Vivelo.

A Spanish team of note but a bit of a mixed bag results wise in the more current years. In the early years the team was definitely top tier and the team rode several Tours of Italy, France & Spain with several international riders. Wins of note being the 1985 Tour of Spain with Pedro Delgado. In the current years its now in the middle tier with a complete Spanish team roster with limited results.

Prominent riders were Pedro Delgado, Matthieu Hermans (sprinrer), Marino Lejarreta (Tour rider) and aussies Hodge & Stephens.

BiciSport Everesting Challenge @ 21 Nov - Tom Green (BiciSport Happy Wheels) completed the ultimate “Everesting” challenge over 16 hours 31 minutes on a home trainer in Newport !. Thats a 5.15am start until a 9.45pm finish. Total distance was 240k and that equals 9 ascents of Alpe D’Huez (on Swift). That’s 9700m of elevation.

Tom consumed a kilo of home made rice cakes, a loaf of marmalade sandwiches, some cold pizza, at least a dozen bidons and a lot of coffee. Tom had great support from his family, plus BiciSport team mates Dudley Hoskin & Mike Lawson.

RMO Professional Cycling Team (France) - 1986-92

RMO was a French employment agency (Relation Main d’Oeuvre), framsets were Meral Liberia (again French), groupsets were Mavic (French). Team management was Bernard Thevenet (won two Tours de France) and Jacques Michaud. Ironically RMO themselves went broke at the end of 1992 and put numerous team members out into the world of unemployment.

A team full of classy riders but victories were really not there, somehow it was lacking something. Yes, Thierry Claveyrolet won the Mountain Jersey at the 1990 Tour de France and Marc Madiot won the 1991 Paris Roubaix but …… . Other very good riders were Charly Mottet, Paul Sherwin, Michel Vermote, Bernard Vallet (won the Bordeaux Paris derny race), Jean Claude Colotti, Paul Kimmage (now a well regarded journalist), Pascal Lino and the aussie Clayton Stevenson.

Gitane Frigecreme Cycling Team (France) - 1972-73

Bikes were Gitane and Frigecreme were ice cream (both French).

French to the core but the only results came via the non French riders in Joop Zoetemelk (at the 1973 Tour de France) and Michael Wright (UK born but lived all his life in France). Results were few & far between except for Joop and the team became Sonolor Gitane in 1974.

Wiels Groene Leeuw Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1945-69

Hard core Belgian with a focus on the single day Classics but they did win the 1960 Tour of Spain with Frans De Mulder. Wiels made a delightful beer, Groen Leeuw (Green Lion) made the bikes.

Besides the win in Spain in 1960 it was really all about the Classics … with wins at Paris Roubaix, Ghent Wevelgem and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne & World Road Championships when Beheyt double crossed his team leader Rik Van Looy (nothing beats a good team scandal).. Supporting team members were Noel Fore, Walter Godefroot, Eric de Vlaeminck, Stan Ockers and Martin Van den Bossche.

TVM Van Schilt Professional Cycling Team (Netherlands) - 1988-2000

TVM was transport and still is - you’ll still regularly see TVM semi trailers on the motorways around Ghent & Antwerp. Other sponsors were Bison, Ragno & Adesital. Framesets were Zullo (Italian) or Gazelle (Dutch). Groupsets were Shimano. Sport Director was Cees Priem.

Definitely a team in the Dutch-Belgian Classics mode with the ability to pick up stage wins in any major Grand Tour. Team members were a classy lot - Johan Capiot (Het Volk), Robert Millar, Phil Anderson, Scott Sunderland, Jesper Skibby, Jeroen Blijevens, Tristan Hoffman, Lars Michaelsen, Peter Van Petegem (Flanders & Het Volk), Servais Knaven, Henrik Redant, Robbie McEwen, Geert Van Bondt, (Ghent Wevelgem), Gert Jan Theuinisse and Steven Rooks. The death sentence for the team was the drug induced 1998 Tour de France and team closure beckoned in 2000.

Peter Van Petegem (TVM) - his Classics season started in late February and was all over by the Paris Roubaix in mid April … the rest of the year was irrelevant

Phil Anderson (TVM) - could win any race in the world up to 10 days duration, and did just that.

Henrik Redant (TVM) - it was all about the Classics, and after retirement became a noted Sports Director.

Sutherland Waratah Park Criterium @ 31 Oct - Craig Pager (BiciSport Anytime Fitness) rode B grade. A big field so hard to get position, but Craig finally worked his way to the front. With two laps to go Craig hit the front and jumped across to a single breakaway rider. At the bell lap the peloton closed down the gap and Craig finished in the peloton.

Ian Grainger & Mike Lawson rode C grade at Lansdowne Park with 37 starters in C grade for a 37kph average.

Rich in history, rich in results, this was one super team. They won both Classics & Tours and they won every race worthy of note. Sponsors were Miko (ice cream) Mercier (bikes), Hutchinson (tyres), Fagor (kitchen appliances), GAN (insurance), Vivagel, COOP (supermarkets), Hoonved (washing machines), BP (petrol). Groupsets were Campagnolo.

Fangio-Tonissteiner-OM Trucks-Mavic Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1979-86

Something of a low budget team that survived from 1979-86 with moderate results but worthy of a closer look. Fangio made Belgian bikes, Sapeco, Marc, EcoTurbo, Tonissteiner was mineral water, OM Trucks were just that & Mavic provided the groupsets. Team manager was ex-pro Wilfred Reybrouck. Dark green team kit reminds one of the current dull & somewhat boring Rapha style kit paraded around your local Aussie suburb.

A team focused on the Belgian kermesse (criterium style) racing calendar with the odd invite to a local Belgian Classic or two. Kermesse riders were Edwin Bafcop, Gary Wiggins (father of) and Michel Vaarten, with a more Belgian Classic squad in Rudy Matthijs, Michel Dernies, Eric Van Lancker & Willy Tackaert.

Hertekamp Magniflex Novy Professional Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1970-73

Nothing like having your main sponsor (Hertekamp) being a gin style seriously alcoholic beverage ... that’ll take the leg pain away !!. Magniflex made bedding/mattresses, Novy was a Belgian bike frameset manufacturer with both Shimano/Campagnolo the groupsets.

The Hertekamp team’s main claim to fame was riding the Tour of Italy in 1970 & 71 (hence the Italian sponsor in Magniflex) and the Tour of Spain in 1971. The team roster rotated through 45 riders in 3 years and included Aussie legend Rob Whetters (1973), plus Jose De Cauwer (went to TI Raleigh), Wilfred Wesemael (also to TI Raleigh), Noel Van Clooster, Willy de Geest, Roland Desmet & Noel Van Tyghem. The most notable team members were Rik Van Linden (a future Classics super star at Bianchi) and Georges Pintens (one of the few riders on a good day to challenge Eddy Merckx)

DAF Professional Cycling Team - 1979-83

Dutch to the core and a strange sponsorship mix of DAF (truck manufacturer), Cote D’Or (chocolates) and TeVe Blad (a weekly TV magazine). Framesets were either Lejeune, Gazelle or Rossin, with Campagnolo the groupset of choice. Team management was legendary Fred De Bruyne and Jose De Cauwer.

Team membership was loaded with talent and results flowed - Gerrie Van Gerwen (World Amateur Road Champion), Rene Martens (won Tour of Flanders 1982), Luc Colijn, Guy Nulens, Eddy Schepers, Willy Tackert, Guido Van Calster, Roger De Vlaeminck (pictured above as Belgian Champion), Adri Van Der Poel, Rik Van Linden, Dirk Heirweg & Hennie Kuiper (won both Tour of Flanders and Tour of Lombardy in 1981).

Gazzola Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1960-64

The team rode 5 Tours of Italy with no stage wins. Notable team leaders sat with Charly Gaul & Ferdi Kubler (won Tour de France 1950 & World Championships 1951).

Gazzola was Italian pasta, bikes were again Italian in Fiorelli and tyres were Hutchinson. Team riders had limited results with Franco Cribiori more famous as a Sports Director at the Brooklyn Chewing Gum team some 10 years later.

Tour of Flanders Cyclosportive @ 18 Sept - Koen & Maarten Verhulst (BiciSport Belgium) on top of the steep Patersberg cobbled climb having completed 205k of the 217k journey from the Antwerp start to the Oudenaarde finish. Usually the Flanders cyclosportive is held the day before the professional Flanders Classic in early April but with Covid it was moved to just before the World Championships in Flanders.

Spring Oil Fuchs (Filotex) Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1963-80.

The broad range of sponsors from Spring Oil, Fuchs, Sanson (food producer), Luxor TV & finally Filotex. Groupsets were Campagnolo and framsets in the Filotex years were Benotto.

The team won anywhere and everywhere but with a strong Italian bias. Franco Bitossi (pictured above) won 171 races in a stellar career (just about every Italian classic there is to mention) plus the first Italian to win the Points Classification in the Tour de France. The Moser brothers in Diego, Aldo & Francesco made up the rest of the squad together with Italo Zilioli & Ugo Colombo.

Germanvox Wega Professional Cycling Team (Italy) - 1967-70

Germanvox made television sets, Wega the coffee, bikes were Coppi, groupsets were Campagnolo.

The team itself, well ... It was loaded full of Italians but if you wanted results it was all about the foreigners in Ole Ritter (Denmark) & Guido Reybrouck (100% Belgian with a very Italian first name).

The Germanvox team rode the Tour of Italy four times and Ritter won two stages plus held the World Hour Record on the velodrome. Reybrouck won three stages in the Tour of Spain plus the Points Classification as well, then managed two stage wins in the Paris Nice stage race. The highly regarded Vito Taccone (Italy) rode for the Germanvox team but had well and truly hit his “used by date” at this point in his career.

St Michel-Auber 93 Professional Team (France) - 1994 to now

Auber 93 is a broad based team established in 1947 and runs the full gambit of juniors, elites & masters. The professional side of Auber 93 started in 1994 and is ongoing to today and originally included sponsorship from Peugeot, Big Mat (Supermarkets) and now sponsored by St Michel. The team is well known for five starts in the Tour de France under the Big Mat sponsorship. The last Tour de France participation was 2001.

The five starts at Le Tour was no mean feat in the broader Auber 93 history and today the team operates as a Category 3 professional team. That is vision and ongoing commitment.

Frisol Professional Cycling Team (Dutch) - 1973-77

Sponsors were Frisol (Dutch oil trader), Flair Plastics, Thirion, Gazelle (framesets) and Campagnolo (groupsets).

An interesting team line up with several notables including aussie legend Don Allan (won a stage in the Tour of Spain), Luis Ocana (won the Tour de France), Cees Priem (future DS at TVM team), Jan Raas (won 1977 Milan San Remo), Roger Rosiers (won Paris Roubaix), Wilfred Wesemael, Fedor Den Hertog (won a small fortune from Dutch “amateur” victories) & Hennie Kuiper (1975 World Road Champion). All in all a classic Dutch team loaded with seemingly endless talent.

Puch Professional Cycling Team (France) - 1980-85

Sponsors were Puch (manufactured both bicycles & mopeds), Wolber (bicycle tyres), Eurotex, Campagnolo, Sem & de Gribaldy. Team manager was Marcel Boishardy with Rudi Altig as his assistant. Altig was a World Pro Road Champion in a prior era and rode for Molteni.

Several notable riders, several of which had previously exited out of Peugeot-Esso … like Thevenet, Ovion, Hezard and Arnaud but, as a team nobody really won much as most were well past their very best. The team did ride the Tour de France and Agostinho was prominent as was Jostein Wilmann. Agostinho sadly died when he collided with a stray dog during a race.
