BiciSport Codemo sponsors presentation @ Griffith @ 27 Sept - Codemo Machinery Services are kindly sponsoring the BiciSport team to the Tour of Bright 2024 (Nov 30 to Dec 2) and the presentation was made at the Codemo headquarters in Griffith. The Codemo specialty is heavy farm machinery in all shapes and sizes (mostly big & bigger). and they sell and service on the premises.

The Bici team Cannondale Super 6 in the presentation was that of Noel La Rose who recently passed away. It was rewarding to remember Noel at this time with two club rides around Griffith on the Saturday & Sunday. MOR is far left & Frank Signor in the centre of the Codemo team lineup.

Paini Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1987

A team based around the Malvor Bottechia team that spanned 12 years. Malvor sponsored both sides of the 1987 season & Paini was only there for one season. If there were any 1987 results the Bici web editor couldn't find any. When it came to team results it was "a gap year" and Malvor took over again in 1988 and things began to improve.

Teka Pro Cycling Team (Spain) - 1976-90

Teka was Spanish kitchen & bath wares. Bikes were Alan, groupsets were Campagnolo.

The Teka team was prominent at the Grande Tours in Spain & Italy, but was also winning stages at the Tour de France & Dauphine Libere. Joaquim Agostinho (Portugal) is featured here and sadly was killed when a stray dog ran in front of him in a professional road race. A heavy roster of 25 riders didn't really win much but Klaus Peter Thaler (Germany) added to the victory list.

Sonolor Lejeune Pro Cycling Team (France) - 1969-77 

Pictured above ... Lucien Van Impe (Sonolor) with Joop Zoetemelk (left) & Eddy Merckx (right) at the 1971 Tour de France

Sonolor was French televisions and the bikes were firstly Lejeune then Gitane in the later years (both French again)

Team riders numbered 29 but the race winners were limited. Lucien Van Impe did win a Tour de France supported by Jose Catieau, and the brothers J & B Guyot. The team also won Liege B Liege, Ghent Wevelgem, Paris Camembert & GP Denain in northern France.

Ecoflam Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1986-87

The team spanned 1982-90 with the Alfa Lum sponsors in and then out. Ecoflam was just for two years. Bikes were OLMO on Campagnolo groupsets. A smallish sized team with barely 15 riders based mostly in Italian races.

Team members were Amadori, Fondriest (1988 World Pro Road Champion), Chiocciolli (future Giro winner), Gaggiolli (team sprinter) & Australian Michael Wilson.

Ceramiche Ariostea Cycling Team (Italy) - 1984-93

One of the best Italian teams of the era but as the peloton was EPO drug fueled at the time you maybe were unsure what you were really looking at. Ariostea was ceramic flooring, bikes were classic Colnago. Jerseys an accepted icon.

Victories were everywhere and not restricted to just Italy - Flanders & Fleche Walloone (Argentin), Sorenson (Paris Tours, Tirreno Adriatico), Richard (Lombardy) with victories in Amstel Gold, Tour de Switerland, Milan Torino, Emilia & Agostini. The team was launched in 1984 and victories started in 1986 - which coincided with the EPO usage.

BiciSport is now in its third year of co-sponsoring the Velle Elite race in East Flanders Belgium in mid August. Mike O'R first visited Velle in 1987 and has returned most years since & visits the Ver Hulst family who continue to run the annual Velle race.

Temse is the main town on the Schelde River (once famous as a major ship building town before it all relocated to Asia), and Velle is a lovely village on the edge of Temse towards Antwerp.

The Velle race has been going since 1955 with a rich list of esteemed winners - Benoni Beheyt 1959 (future pro World Road Champion at Ronse over legend Rik Van Looy), Martin Van Den Bossche 1961 (future Eddy Merckx team mate at both Faema & Molteni), then a peloton of future Belgian professionals - Julien Stevens 1963, Willy Planckaert 1964, Andre Dierickx 1966, Eddy Peelman 1967, Rudy Matthijs 1980, Wim van Eynde 1981, Stephen van Leeuve 1983 then Guy Smet won a staggering 10 times from 1999 until he finally bought a Masters licence.

GAN Mercier Pro Cycling Team (France) - 1934-84

Mercier was a longstanding bike sponsor and GAN was insurance. Groupsets were firstly Mafac then Campagnolo. Jersey is a retro icon.

A classy team, albeit under 20 riders in number. Raymond Poulidor (The Tour - stages & podium), Barry Hoban (won Ghent Wevelgem - picture above), Joop Zoetemelk (won everywhere), Gerrie Knetemann (World Champion), Cess Bal (won Tour of Flanders), Alain Sainty (won Paris Camembert) and Cyrille Guimard (Tour de France Points & stages). One of the great teams in the 1970’s.

Paris Olympics Road Race @ 4 Aug - Paul Vermeiren (centre) is a three time Belgian Olympian in Archery for Belgium and was sighted on the cobbled climb near the Moulin Rouge in Paris. MOR first met PV at the Monsere Memorial in East Flanders in March 24 and a great week followed to the Paris Roubaix Classic a short time later.

Brianzoli Essebi Pro Racing Team (Italy) - 1984-87

A pure Italian pro team from 1984-87 with only 15 riders but loaded with talent. Francesco Moser took the Hour Record (picture above) but the team also won the Tour of Lombardy (with Gibi Baronchelli) and Moser & Thurau took stage wins in the Giro. Tony Rominger was only a neo pro at this point and went onto much bigger & better things in the years to come.

Marc-Wickes-Euro Shop-Euo Decor-Euro Soap Splendor Pro Cycling Team (Belgium) - 1979-89

Splendor was Belgian bikes and the glue that kept the whole train running from 1979 to 1989. Groupsets were Campagnolo. The major sponsors were numerous - Euro Decor, Euro Soap, Wickes, Euro Shop, Marc …. everybody was Euro of some sort … and finally Hitachi from 1985 to 1989 (when jersey design flipped to a strong orange).

A group of hard men who preferred hard work in lycra than maybe a Belgian factory somewhere in deep darkest Flanders. Team victories from 1979 to 1984 were stage victories at the Tour of Spain & France plus several one day races (mostly in Belgium). The hard core team members included Sean Kelly, Planckaert Brothers, Michel Pollentier, Rudy Matthijs, Claude Criqielion & Etienne De Wilde.

Malvor Bottecchia Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1983

A classy but relatively small pro team with just 13 members, including top Aussie rider in Greg Clifton (see above picture). The team history covered 1978-1990. Malvor was cosmetics, Hoonved was washing machines, bikes were Bottecchia, groupsets Campagnolo, clothing was Castelli - all very very Italian.

Team members included Greg Clifton (Aus), Mario Beccia, Bevilacqua brothers, Daniel Gisiger & Robert Dill Bundi. The 1983 team had 7 victories at GP de Nations and stages at Tour de Suisse, Romandie and the Giro.

Selle Italia (saddles) has sponsored teams from 1982-2006 and after 2007 was a sub sponsor to numerous professional cycling teams In 1982 the team was sponsored by Chinol (Italian furniture), Selle Italia & Benotto (bikes)

BiciSport is proud to announce both Codemo Machinery Services and Ciccia (at Freshwater) as team sponsors to the Tour of Bright (Victoria) in November-December 2024.

Codemo are major suppliers of farm machinery to the Griffith agricultural region & Ciccia is a boutique Italian cafe in central Freshwater in the northern suburbs of Sydney. Happy Wheels Waterloo continues as a life time supporter of BiciSport together with the Happy Wheels team (which also continues as now into 2025).

Vivi Benotto Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1982-83

Sponsors were Vivi, plus co-sponsors in Selle Italia (saddles), Puma (shoes), and Benotto (frames).

Very much a boutique Italian team focused on the Tour of Italy (Giro) in both 1982 and 1983. Franco Chioccioli won the Young Rider classification at the ‘83 Giro and went on to win the ‘91 Giro. Meaningful team mates were few and far between with Gregor Braun and Jos Lammertink being the rare exceptions.

The Tour de France starts at the end of this week and the fearless BiciSport web editor predictions are -

* Podagar will win the Tour by 5 minutes …. then head to the Tour of Spain and do the Triple

* UAE will win the Teams Classification

* UAE will get 4 riders in the top 15. Adam Yates will be brilliant.

* Ineos will have a great Tour on both the General & Teams classfication with Pidcock & Bernal

* Remco E will be fortunate to go top 10 (more like a top 20) - one super bad day in the mountains will ruin it all, give up on riding the Tours altogether and head to Flanders & Roubaix and the Spring Classics in 2025 where he really belongs.

* Visma -Lease a Bike will be lucky to win a stage & Vingegaard will struggle in the third week (that’s brave). Maybe Jorgenson will save the Visma Tour with a stage win. Wout & Vinny should have both stayed at home & ridden the Vuelta instead.

* Simon Yates (Jayco) & Primoz Roglic will go top 10. Roglic will crash.

* Derek Gee at Premier Tech will win a stage & go top 15 (maybe top 10)

* Mark Cavendish breaks the Merckx record of stage wins ... justice would support please no ! !. Sir Cav will not finish the Tour.

* SBS commentary team will be outside the time limit from Stage 1 and will not start Stage 2

Selle San Marco Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1981-82

Selle San Marco still make high quality cycle racing seats to this day and co sponsor numerous pro cycling teams. Groupsets were Campagnolo and framesets were Wilier. Team jerseys were a good design but the team cars missed the mark completely.

Team results for two years rested with Alfio Vandi who won a couple of Italian semi Classics and rode two Giros. Simply put - they didn’t win much and the sponsorship end couldn’t come fast enough. Thankfully San Marco still produce a great product.

Cyndarella Isotonic Pro Cycling Team (Swiss) - 1988

Very much a second tier team with a very small list of victories (stage wins at Tour de Swiss and Giro), sitting on fashionable LOOK bikes with Shimano groupsets. Isotonic is a sports drink and the clothing was provided by Assos.

Results were restricted to the Tours of Switzerland & Romandie and Beat Breu went 11th in the Giro in 1988 (the Giro year over the Gavia Pass in the snow). Other team notables were Gisiger, Jarmann, Fuchs & Stutz. The team photos below have crates of fruit in the photo … maybe a clue as to the Cyndarella origins.

Once upon a time in cycling paradise, not that long ago, NSW had a healthy number of 100k road race handicaps on the State racing program. Be it the two Cootamundra Weekends, the Coonabarabran Gunnedah. the Wagga Albury, or maybe a Grafton Inverell, a Goulburn Camden, the Mussellbrook Tamworth, a Nyngan Dubbo or lastly a nice Mudgee Open. Some interclub level handicaps remain but they too are now as rare as Campagnolo 10 speed.

Now its just one - the Ken Dinnerville handicap in Dapto.

Eorotex Mavic Gitane Pro Cycling Team (Switzerland) - A vague Swiss team with a media presence of limited scope. In fact its better know as Eurotex on most google searches.

Sponsors were Magniflex (Italian mattresses), Mavic (cycling components), Gitane were the bikes, and Assos did the team clothing.

GIS Gelati Jolly Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1978 to 1991

GIS Gelati was the primary sponsor for many years, and secondary sponsors came and went. This period with Jolly was 1987 & 1988. GIS was certainly Italian ice cream and Jolly was an Italian footwear company.

Team members through the whole term (78 to 91) contained every Italian of note but at different times … from Moser to Saronni to Chioccioli. The 1987 and 1988 years were comparatively lean results wise - Johan Van de Velde won some Giro stages but team support was meagre in Adriano Baffi (sprinter), Franco Chioccioli (Tour rider), sprinters Pettito & Masciarelli.

Van der Velde did a legendary ride in the snow on the Gavia Pass in the ‘88 Giro (won by Andy Hampsten).
